Diabetes and Obesity

Dear Friends and Practitioners

The New Zealand Nutrition Survey (1999) showed that 54% of our adult population is overweight or obese! This is reflected in an unprecedented increase in Type 2 Diabetes. Recent statistics indicate that weight is a major contributor in 70% of people with Diabetes (WHO Report).

Those newly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes who are overweight must be made aware of the importance of weight reduction. They need to know from the outset that treatment with sulphonylureas or insulin is likely to increase their weight, and the more it increases the more medication they need – a vicious cycle indeed. They also need to be aware that heart disease is their number one enemy.

The goal for managing Type 2 Diabetes is to increase insulin sensitivity by

eating a reasonable amount (50-55En%) of low glycaemic index carbohydrate.

There has been much media coverage recently on low carbohydrate diets. The overall impression has been that one can eat unlimited fat and still lose weight. A rapid weight loss will occur but not a ‘fat’ loss, rather a loss of glycogen, muscle and fluid, and ketosis may result. Low carbohydrate diets are not recommended.

This is a major area where Dietitians at the Nutrition Therapy Clinic can help patients make long-term lifestyle changes. We specialise in obesity, diabetes, dyslipidaemia and all areas of nutrition for all age groups, and can give your patients guidance and support with the most up-to-date resources and techniques. By identifying patients’ nutritional needs and giving practical, personalised advice and ongoing support, we can help them take action.

Nutrition Therapy Clinic offers a six-day service, including weekday evenings, with International trained, and NZ Registered Dietitians and Nutritionists. People can generally be seen within 48 hours after contacting the Clinic, and referring Doctors will receive a report within the week, most medical insurance companies cover Dietitians’ consultancy fees.
